Launch Conference for the 7th Egyptian Competitiveness Report (ECR) 2010

" Green Egypt : A vision for Tomorrow "

Under the auspices of HE Ahmed Nazif , the Egyptian Prime Minister, the Egyptian National Competitiveness Council (ENCC) organizes on May 24, 2010 a special event for the launch of its 7th annual Egyptian Competitiveness Report (ECR) .The aim of this conference is to present the results of the ECR which is published this year under the title  " Green Egypt : A vision for Tomorrow " and to discuss the main issues that was discussed in the report.

H.E. Rachid Mohamed Rachid, the Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry will inaugurate the Conference. The session's moderator will be Prof. Hossam Badrawi, Honorary Chair, ENCC and the session will include speakers : Prof. Mona El Baradei, the Executive Director of the ENCC, Mr. Helmy Abouleish, the Chairman of the ENCC and Ms. Deborah Wince-Smith President and CEO, The U.S. Council on Competitiveness.

The First Session will discuss the results of the first chapter entitled" Benchmarking Egypt's Competitiveness" which analyses Egypt's competitiveness ranking according to the Global Competitiveness Index issued by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The chapter will be presented by Dr. Malak Reda, Senior Economist at the Egyptian Centre for Economics Studies. It will discuss also the results of the second chapter " Fiscal Policy Levers for Inclusive Growth" which highlights the macroeconomic status of Egypt and will be presented by Mrs. Amina Ghanem, Deputy Minister of International Relations, Minister of Finance. The keynote speaker of the session is H.E. Dr. Osman Mohamed Osman ,the Minister of Economic Development and is moderated by Dr. Dr. Samir Radwan  the Senior Economic Advisor at the Egyptian Financial Supervisory  Authority.

The Second Session will discuss " Green Transformation ", the main topic of the ECR 2010, in addition to " The Competitiveness of the Energy Sector " . This session will be headed by H.E. Dr. Hassan Younes, the Minister of Electricity and Energy and moderated by Eng. Asharf El Gazyerli, the Chairman of the Egyptian Junior Business Association .

The session includes a joint- presentation for the 4th chapter of the ECR entitled " The Competitiveness of the Energy Sector " by the authors of the chapter; Dr. Mohamed Salah Elsobki- Professor of Electric Power Systems and Director of the Energy Research Center, Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University and   Eng. Yasser Sherif - General Manager, Environics. In this session, the most important sources of Energy in Egypt in addition to the competitiveness of the sector will be discussed. The session will also discuss the potentials of the sector especially investment in the renewable energy sector such as : Solar Energy and Wind Energy where Egypt enjoys a competitive advantage will be discussed.

Mr. Alan Atkisson, President and CEO of The AtKisson Group will be a speaker in the second session. He will discuss the " Green Transformation" and the importance of the sector in pushing the development process in Egypt and highlight the challenges Egypt may face.

The Third Session will analyze the 5th chapter of the ECR which studies in depth " The Competitiveness Of The Construction Industry :  A Green Perspective" . It will emphasize the possibility of the transformation into the green construction techniques. It will be moderated by Eng. Hussein Sabbour, the Chairman and Managing Director of Al Ahly Real Estate Development Co. A presentation on the chapter will be made by " Dr. Nihal El Magharbel - Head of Economic Affairs, Decentralization Support Unit, Ministry of State for Local Development and Prof. Lobna Abdel-Latif- the Head of the Economics Department of the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University. The speakers of this session will also include Prof. Moustafa El Demirdash- Chairman, Housing and Building National Research Center and the discussant will be Eng. Hisham Shoukry- Executive President and CEO of ROOYA Group.


The conference will be concluded by a speech by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Darwish, the Minister of State for Administrative Development.
